Hotline: Doherty takes on Carlin
After George Carlin died on Sunday, several wags wondered if he was about to pay the price for years of criticizing the Lord above and his minions here on Earth. Now someone a bit more mortal is looking to take a few playful swipes at the comic legend: Boston’s own Dick Doherty.
Having risen through the New York club ranks with Carlin in the ’70s, Doherty plans to pay irreverent tribute to Carlin Wednesday night at his Beantown Comedy Vault, located in Remington’s Restaurant on Boylston Street in the Theater District.
Don’t expect Doherty to recite Carlin’s famous “Seven Words” shtick.
“I’m a little devilish, but clean and lovable,” Doherty said in a press release.

The Bronx to hit Allston
Shhhhh! The sickest secret show of the summer goes down July 21 at Great Scott in Allston. Los Angeles hardcore punk quintet the Bronx will take a rare day off from the Warped Tour to throw down at Fury, the monthly metal party now following in the footsteps of Blackout Bar.
Two days before the Warped Tour rolls into the Comcast Center in Mansfield, the Bronx hit the intimate Allston club under the faux moniker White Drugs, which fans will recognize as the name of their label imprint. Advance tickets are not available; the cover: just $5.
And speaking of Fury, this month’s installment goes down Thursday, featuring live guest The Red Chord and guest DJs Kevin Baker of Hope Conspiracy, Jim Carroll of Clouds and Jonah Jenkins of Only Living Witness.
Aberdeen City not holding steady?
The fairly successful and always free Miller Lite Music Series returns to Boston Thursday with Brooklyn indie stalwarts the Hold Steady and local alternative faves Aberdeen City at the Paradise Rock Club.
While the Hold Steady is using the gig to launch its North American tour, the show could also mark a turning point in the career of Aberdeen City. The band has been on the verge of breaking out nationally since its 2006 album “The Freezing Atlantic” took home Local Album of the Year at the Boston Music Awards.
Reached Tuesday, Aberdeen City guitarist Ryan Heller would neither confirm nor deny rumors the band is calling it quits. But something is afoot in Aberdeen.
“Without getting into details, I will say that there are likely to be some major changes in the near future,” Heller told Hotline in an e-mail. “This is going to be a great night and a special set for us, so my advice is for people to come out early to secure a spot for the show.”
Interested parties can RSVP at going.com/millerliteseries. The site will accept 2,000 RSVPs, but admission to the 650-person Paradise is on a first-come basis.
