But despite initial difficulties finding a financial backer for the project, Anderson has now reportedly been given the green light for the film.

A source tells British newspaper the Daily Express, "Gillian has been desperate to play this role. We were beginning to wonder whether it would ever happen. Gillian has rarely been so excited about a part."

The movie will reportedly begin production next year (09) after the star gives birth to her third child with husband Mark Griffiths.

Were people mean to you like Blair was? "There was always one little girl in each grade that was mean to me. But I was never mean to anyone. I was never like, 'Ew!'?"

Meester, who appeared in season one of Entourage as Justine Chapin, will reprise her role in season five, appearing in at least one episode in the first half of the season. Season five of the show is set to premiere in September.

A native of Marco Island, Florida, Meester moved with her family to New York City when she was 11 and soon after began working as a model with Wilhelmina, booking a Ralph Lauren campaign shot by Bruce Webber and working with then-photographer Sofia Coppola. Verne Troyer's ex-girlfriend leaked a controversial sex tape of the couple in the bedroom to a celebrity website, it has been reported.

Snippets from a videotape of Troyer - who stars in the Austin Powers movies as 'Mini-Me' - and Ranae Shrider was posted on the website TMZ.com last week.

It was removed following a $20 million lawsuit filed by Troyer.

Shrider signed a declaration filed in federal court in Los Angeles stating the tape was created with
her video camera, news agency Associated Press reported.

Her statement prompted a judge to allow TMZ to reinstate snippets from the tape.

Troyer's lawsuit alleges the tape was stolen, but Shrider believes she owns the tape and has given TMZ.com permission to air it.

You may not unsubscribe to this database at any time"), and ads for Xanadou, the revolutionary BnL-created pill that promises to simulate a "euphoric shopping experience." It's smart, funny marketing that reminds us to be skeptical of all big companies, except for Pixar, whom we now trust lovingly and unconditionally.

The New York Times called it "a crude reference" and Brit Hume on Fox News later talked about "a certain part of [Obama's] anatomy." Later, Bill O'Reilly commented on his own Fox program that his network was not airing the video to embarrass Jackson. "If we were, we would have used what we had, which is more damaging than what you have heard," O'Reilly said.

British soap actor CLIVE HORNBY has died at the age of 63, after a battle with ill health.

Hornby played Jack Sugden in popular show Emmerdale for 28 years.

He has not appeared on the ITV network programme for three months, because of an unknown illness, and died on Thursday (03Jul08).

Emmerdale producer Anita Turner says, "This is a devastating loss and we are all deeply saddened.

"Clive will be greatly missed by everyone who has worked with him on Emmerdale during the past 28 years.

"He was a hugely popular and well-respected member of cast and a terrific actor. Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time."

Any suspicions that Kimberly Peirce was a one-note art house auteur (her first and only feature was 1999's Boys Don't Cry) will be immediately assuaged by the full-throttle war-film assuredness of the opening sequences of her Iraq war film Stop-Loss. Shot in part like the homemade videos that modern American soldiers often make of their own experiences (filmed on the battlefield and then edited, usually with pop music soundtracks, on their personal computers), it establishes with smash-bang audacity and authenticity the camaraderie and of an infantry squad serving in Tikrit near the end of their rotation. The combat witnessed is typically brutal, up-close, and all-inclusive (military and civilian) in terms of casualties. Without having to put much of anything into words, Peirce has put her fresh-faced young cast (Ryan Phillippe, Channing Tatum, Joseph Gordon-Levitt) through a meat-grinder of an ordeal that makes it perfectly clear that once these guys are back stateside, patriotic or not, they're done.

Like In the Valley of Elah -- which this film occasionally seems like an MTV/Varsity Blues pop variation of -- most of Stop-Loss is set back in the States. The war is seen mostly in flickers and video-montages, the kind that keep a man up at night. In one particularly grueling scene set at a military hospital, a hideously scarred soldier missing two limbs confides that at night his ward sounds like a horror movie, with all the nightmares and screaming. Also like Elah, Peirce's script (co-written with Mark Richard) is steeped in oorah military brio and discipline, where there is little questioning of war itself. Stop-Loss is, however, a message movie, and no matter how artfully Peirce directs her cast and tries to avoid any sense of political polemic, there's just no avoiding that message, a fact that nearly scuppers the whole film.

The message of Stop-Loss is one that few on either side of the Iraq debate would argue, that the practice of the film's title -- where soldiers can have their term of service extended indefinitely in order to make up for falling recruitment levels and there being no draft -- sucks. Once the rattled squad is returned home to Texas, amidst a blizzard of flags and cheers, they seem held together with little more than duct tape and battlefield bravado. It's not hard to believe, then, the swiftness with which the formerly gung-ho squad leader Brandon King (Phillippe) reacts to the news that he's been stop-lossed and is getting sent back to Iraq. On being told by his commanding officer that it's the President's right to keep soldiers serving as long as he wishes, King (a good Texas boy and patriot who'd clearly rather light himself on fire than disrespect his country) responds, "With all due respect, sir, fuck the President."

Things go downhill after that, both for the film and for King, who goes AWOL and takes off cross-country with his best friend's ex-fianc�e (Aussie actress Abbie Cornish) on a half-baked, quixotic mission to get his senator in Washington to help him. The road-film being the hoariest of screenplay devices, it wears thin fast, quickly losing the impressive momentum that the first quarter of the film had attained. By separating King from his squadmates, most of whom are undergoing some form of PTSD meltdown, Peirce also loses the cast's organic-feeling camaraderie (not to mention giving short shrift to some heartbreaking work by Gordon-Levitt), one of the best things her film had going for it.

In Stop-Loss, Peirce (whose brother served in Iraq) certainly does right by the soldiers (real and imagined) in terms of not resorting to cheap polemic from one side of the debate or the other. But even her impressive handling of the actors, a pop approach that's glossy without being shallow, voluminous background research, and some glorious cinematography by Chris Menges can't obscure the problems of a seriously dithering screenplay. It's not to say that Peirce should have rushed into something after Boys Don't Cry, but after seeing the honorable intentions but flawed results of Stop-Loss, it's possible that nine years was perhaps too long a gestation.

Sparks were a vehicle for the skew pop smarts and weisenheimer wordplay of brothers Ron and Russell Mael, Los Angeles natives world Health Organization exhausted their childhood modeling young men's room wearing apparel for mail order catalogs. While touring the U.K., Sparks were warmly received by the British music press, and ultimately, the Mael brothers relocated to London, departure the rest of the band behind; Earle Mankey after became a noted manufacturer, piece Jim later coupled Concrete Blonde. In need of a new support unit, the Maels placed an ad in Melody Maker, and with guitarist Adrian Fisher, bassist Martin Gordon, and drummer Norman "Dinky" Diamond hard in place, they recorded 1974's glam-bubblegum piece of music Kimono My House, which reached the Top Five of the U.K. album charts and spawned deuce major British hits, "This Town Ain't Big Enough for the Both of Us" and "Amateur Hour."

With new guitarist Trevor White and bassist Ian Hampton, Sparks returned later that year with Propaganda, some other U.K. smash that scored with the hits "Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth" and "Something for the Girl with Everything." Overblown production from Tony Visconti derailed 1975's Indiscreet, however, and when the record fared less successfully than its predecessors, the Maels returned to the U.S., where they recruited Tuff Darts guitarist Jeff Salen, sometime Milk & Cookies bassist Sal Maida, and drummer Hilly Michaels for 1976's Great Beat.

By 1977's ironic Introducing Sparks, recorded with a series of Los Angeles school term players, the Mael brothers were treading water, so they enlisted disco manufacturer Giorgio Moroder to helm 1979's synth-powered dance-pop confection No. 1 in Heaven, which spurred the grouping to renewed success in England on the speciality of the strike singles "The Number One Song in Heaven," "Quiver the Clock," and "Tryouts for the Human Race." Moroder's sidekick Harold Faltermeyer took the production reins for the immediate follow-up, Terminal Jive, which scored a monumental French gain with "When I'm with You."

Sparks left disco music in the dust with 1981's Whomp That Sucker, recorded in Munich with a unexampled supporting band comprised of guitarist Bob Haag, bassist Leslie Bohem, and drummer David Kendrick (wHO also played in concert as the Gleaming Spires). After 1982's Angst in My Pants, they recorded 1983's Sparks in Outer Space; the marvelous "Cool Places," a span with the Go-Go's Jane Wiedlin, nigh reached the U.S. Top 40, and was the band's biggest gain.

The disastrous 1984 LP Pulling Rabbits Out of a Hat derailed whatsoever chart momentum the band had collected at home, however, and after 1986's self-explanatory Music That You Can Dance To, Sparks -- once again reduced to the core duet of Ron and Russell -- recorded 1988's Interior Design, which was followed by a recollective reprieve. Outside of composing the music for a film by Hong Kong action master Tsui Hark, Sparks remained still until Gratuitous Sax and Senseless Violins, released in 1994. Plagiarism followed quaternity years later. With 2000's Balls, the band ushered in a more than productive earned run average, cathartic Lil' Beethoven in 2002 and Howdy Young Lovers in 2006.

Parmount said that the DreamWorks' Animation-produced Kung Fu Panda took in $21.7 million, while Universal claimed that The Incredible Hulk took in $21.6 million. While box-office trackers Media by Numbers listed them as the No. 2 and No. 3 film in its top-ten chart, their positions could change when final figures are released later today (Monday). (Van Drunen would go on to nominal head Dutch band Asphyx for trine records, 1991's The Rack, 1992's Shell the Cenotaph EP, and 1993's Final One on Earth, as intimately as providing vocals for Comecon's Convergence Conspiracies record (1993); he as well fronted English death-grind mavens Bolt Thrower for a short time in the mid-'90s, although he never performed on whatsoever of the outfit's recordings ahead unwellness forced him out of the music business.) Next version of its flagship animation tool

Avid Technology's animation software entity Softimage unveiled the next version of its flagship animation tool -- its first major announcement since its parent company reshuffled its management and strategy this year.

Key to new Softimage|XSI version 7 software -- scheduled for availability during the third quarter -- is an open platform called Ice that includes a visual interface and node-based programming model.

"The Softimage Ice platform will allow content producers to easily create, modify and deploy complex tools and effects more efficiently than ever before," said Avid vp Marc Stevens, who serves as GM of Softimage.

Publicly traded Avid hired CEO Gary Greenfield in December. Since then it has added new executives including Kirk Arnold, executive vp and GM of Avid's professional video business unit, which includes Softimage. Avid also launched a new "costumer focused" strategy that included a product line reshuffling.

"As much as we are part of video, we are at a different point," Softimage's Bill Roberts said. "Softimage is the only part of Avid that has a strong presence in gaming. ... It's very core to our strategy." Its other verticals are film, TV and design visualization.

"We prepared our business on a three-year operating plan and five-year strategic plan," Roberts added. "When new management came in, they left that (in place). We've really had no disruption with the changes at the corporate level."

The unit expects to make additional product announcements at the Siggraph computer graphics confab next month in Los Angeles.

"Hancock" rang up an estimated $6.7 million from about 3,600 theaters that scheduled "preview" showtimes of the Will Smith action pic.

Sony expands the tentpole release to 3,965 locations Wednesday. Although attracting mixed reviews from critics, the pic has been tracking well and is expected to gross more than $100 million through Sunday.

Its Friday-Sunday performance will be measured against those by pics including last year's top grosser over the Independence Day session, "Transformers."

The DreamWorks/Paramount action pic grossed $70.5 million during its first weekend after unspooling with Monday night previews in advance of an official Tuesday bow. (July 4 fell on a Wednesday last year.)

Although in that respect was a good handle of talent involved in Balls, non practically of it translated into recorded production, as they issued just one quite dull tough rock single, "Fight for My Country"/"Janie Slow Down" (1971). At several times the mathematical group featured Denny Laine, Trevor Burton, Steve Gibbons, Alan White, and Jackie Lomax: all names that make at least some recognition among fans of sixties and seventies British stone. They were proof, however, on a very minor league stratum, that supergroup assemblages of talent don't always, or much, lead to superduper results.

Balls began in February 1969, when Trevor Burton left wing the Move (where he had played bass) to bring together fella Birmingham band the Uglys, taking over on guitar sort of than bass voice. Changing their name to Balls, they went to a cottage in Fordingbridge to get it together in the land, in the fashion popularized by Traffic. Original Moody Blues pb vocalist Denny Laine came in on guitar and vocals during the summer (though Steve Gibbons was seemingly the to the highest degree prominent singer). However, they regrouped as a quartette in the summer of 1970, retaining Laine and Burton and adding Lomax and future Yes drummer Alan White. Lomax left wing after a calendar week, and Gibbon rejoined. Nothing must sustain been seriously jelling, because they stony-broke up in February 1971, although ex-Spooky Tooth drummer Mike Kellie came in exactly before the split.

That's the episode reported in Pete Frame's Family Trees book, anyway. Coldplay Overcome 'Ear Trouble' To Wow At Free New York Show

Coldplay brought to an end their trio of free shows with a star-studded performance at Madison Square Garden in New York last night (June 23rd).

The concert, which followed free shows in London and Barcelona, saw the band perform songs from their number one album 'Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends'.

Despite a number of technical difficulties, which included Chris Martin stopping one song because his ear piece fell out, the band delivered a powerful set.

As with the band's previous shows, Martin was on jovial form throughout the concert, joking at one point about the bands chart success in America, where they currently hold the number one spot on the singles countdown with the album's title track.

“Somehow this made it to No. 1 in your country," Martin told the crowd.

"It just goes to show you what good marketing and a handsome bass player can do."

Coldplay's set was watched by a number of celebrities, including Molly Sims and Helana Christensen.

Coldplay have revealed the title of their fourth album, which will be released on 16 June.
The band's new record will be entitled 'Viva La Vida' and is named after a painting by artist Frida Kahlo.
The title translates as 'Long Live Life'. Frontman Chris Martin said he decided to name the album after Kahlo's painting as he found her life inspirational. Kahlo had suffered from polio.
Speaking to Rolling Stone magazine, the singer said: "She went through a lot of s***, of course. And then she started a big painting in her house that said 'Viva La Vida'. I just loved the boldness of it."
However, Martin admitted that the title may remind some people of Ricky Martin's global hit single 'La Vida Loca'.
"Everyone thinks it comes from Ricky Martin, which is fine. I have absolute respect. I've been through this before, naming something or someone and everyone saying 'that's a terrible name'," said Martin, referring to calling his daughter Apple.
He added: "So when 'Viva La Vida' came along, I was kind of annoyed because I'm going to have to try and convince everybody of this, but it just felt right."

NEW YORK - Stevie Wonder is fidgeting with his camera phone, embarrassed because he can't get it to work right.

But wait, it's not what you think. Wonder is trying to show a reporter how the device helps him "see" written documents; moments later, the blind superstar reveals how the camera takes photos of text, converts it to audio and reads the words aloud, and instantly has wowed his audience of one.

But Wonder doesn't need to rely on technology to amaze. Now on a U.S. tour, all he needs to do is open his mouth and start singing some of his classic hits: "Superstitious," "I Wish," "As," "My Cherie Amour" - and he gets a crowd into a frenzy. Actually, just his appearance on stage is usually enough: His icon status is enough to leave an audience in awe.

In person, Wonder, 58, comes off more like your friendly uncle than a legendary musical figure: he cracks jokes, tells stories, and opines about politics and world peace. Here's a sampling of what Wonder had to say when he spoke recently with The Associated Press.

AP: Before you started touring last fall, your last full-fledged tour was in 1996. Why did you decide to get back on the road?

Wonder: Just having a chance to say thank you to the fans. After I lost my mother in May of 2006 I had said that I wasn't going to perform for a while. But I got the message (from my mother) to go and spread the message, celebrating some of the feats that we have such as coming together and fighting against apartheid. ... We cannot forever think that we will have the blessings that we have without staying on point.

AP: You are a supporter of Barack Obama. One refrain from a lot of people is that they never thought they'd see a day where there was a tangible possibility of a black president. Did you feel that way too or did you think that it could happen someday in your lifetime?

Wonder: Of course I did. I always felt: Why not? What's the big deal? Someday there will be a Latino president and an Asian president and a Jewish president. We can't talk about those things and then not be. The Lord that I serve says the impossible is unacceptable. If we can fly to Mars and have many trips to the moon ... will find the cure to cancer. I just feel that we need to use more of our power for the goodness. ... We are in a battle for good and evil. You've got to take a position. My focus is not just because he is an African-American ... but his spirit is one of being kind of free.

AP: If Obama is elected president, are you angling to perform at the inauguration?

Wonder: I'm just excited. Obviously if I'm invited to be there it's an honour, but I didn't do all of that to get a pat on the back. ... I'm just excited about it. It's time for America and the world to grow up and grow into the right now and stop the B.S., and B.S. stands for breaking the spirit.

AP: You have been more than a singer but an activist for years. Do you wish that younger singers were as concerned about social issues as you have been?

Wonder: There are very conscious people ... you've got various people doing their thing. There is a place of consciousness within. Someone has to stand out there and sometimes they have to stand alone. At the end of all that you are going to have people who take a position and move us forward. That doesn't mean that every single artist has to write some conscious song.

AP: Can you appreciate some of the less conscious - perhaps even a bit ignorant - songs on the radio today?

Wonder: The good thing about satellite radio is ... that there's a freedom of expression that happens. I'm not going to let my kids listen to raw (stuff), but I might a little. (Sings a little bit of Lil Wayne's "Lollipop"). I didn't know so many people were licking and sucking ... it's all over the place (laughs)!

AP: You ever wish you had the freedom back in the day to get a little raw on record?

Wonder: I don't think I would do a song that said can we (expletive) right now or anything like that. I don't think I would do something like that, or a song that said certain things, whether it be 30 years ago or right now. I don't see myself as doing that just because there are other things to saying what you wanna say without saying it like that. That's private business... I'm not an advocate of giving everything up. (Laughs.)

AP: You mentioned you are a fan of Nas. What do you think of the whole controversy about him initially wanting to title his new album the n-word?

Wonder: I'm not with the word only in that we had buried the word and it should have been buried. People say well we use it for fun and whatever. I'm not really feeling it and I know sometimes it comes in conversation ... For all the pain that has happened over the years, what that word brings up, it needs to go away.

Underworld became one of the most important electronic acts of the 1990s via an intriguing synthesis of old and new. The trio's two-man frontline, singer Karl Hyde and guitarist Rick Smith, had been recording together since the early-'80s new wave explosion; afterward deuce unsuccessful albums released as Underworld during the late '80s, the couple eventually strike it grownup when they recruited Darren Emerson, a young DJ hipped to the levelheaded of techno and trance. Hyde worked on guitar sessions for Debbie Harry and Prince, then reunited with Smith in 1988 to word form an industrial-funk lot called Underworld. After they reverted back up to Underworld, 1993's "Rez" and "MMM...Skyscraper I Love You" caused a venial sensation in the dance community of interests. Instead of adding small elements of techno to a essentially pop or john Rock formula (as many bands had attempted with variable success), Underworld treated techno as the dominant force. Their debut album, Dubnobasswithmyheadman, was praised by many critics upon release later on in 1993 and crossed over to the British pop charts. Hyde, Smith, and Emerson impressed many at their concert dates as well; the trio on the face of it relished playacting live, touring Great Britain twice summation Japan, Europe, and the annual summer-festival circuit, where their Glastonbury appearing became the clobber of legend.

Dubnobasswithmyheadman was released in the U.S. in 1995 later being licenced to TVT Records. Thomas McCarthy � the writer and director behind the season�s indie sleeper hit, The Visitor � is moving into disaster movie territory by booking a role in Roland Emmerich�s film 2012.

McCarthy, on a cross-Europe jaunt promoting the immigration-themed The Visitor, joins an ensemble cast that includes John Cusack, Amanda Peet, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Thandie Newton, Danny Glover and Oliver Platt.

McCarthy will play the boyfriend of Peet, who is the ex-wife of Cusack�s character.

The movie is a far cry from the types of films McCarthy is known for, whether as an actor (he had roles in Michael Clayton and Flags Of Our Fathers) or as a director (his first movie was the award-winning The Station Agent).

McCarthy said he is driven to roles out of curiosity.

�As an actor, I�ve never worked on anything with this scale before, and I always go see these movies,� McCarthy said in a recent interview.

�And then there�s the director part of me. I get really excited about working with directors like this, who do things that are so wildly different from me. And he (Emmerich) really is. He works on a totally different canvas.�

While some actors do big studio projects in order to sustain themselves in between indie character films, this is not the case here, McCarthy said.

�This does have a big budget and I do make more money, which is nice, but I know if you take a job like this just for the money, you�ll be miserable,� he said.

�There�s got to be something as an actor, and also in this case, as a director, that I�m excited about. There are other ways for me to make money.�

McCarthy, much like John Sayles, who takes on studio writing jobs in between his movies, also does rewrites and polishes for the big companies.

McCarthy lately has been taking roles in movies being made by writer-directors as a way to learn things that apply to his own work, which is why he has gigs in Tony Gilroy�s Duplicity and Peter Jackson�s The Lovely Bones.

�As a writer-director I love to work with other writer-directors,� he said. �It�s such a bonus for me. I�m not only watching and observing, I�m involved in the process. It�s cool luxury.�

The film 2012 is set to shoot in August in Vancouver. McCarthy also will begin working on a new script that he intends to direct.

"Pig Candy: Taking My Father South, Taking My Father Home — a Memoir"

Lise Funderburg, an award-winning journalist and author of "Black, White, Other," has penned an enduring, poignant and at times laugh-out-loud narrative about her father, George Newton Funderburg, in her memoir, "Pig Candy: Taking My Father South, Taking My Father Home."

The story begins with the author's first trip in March 2004 to 354 Fellowship Road, the address of the farm her father bought 20 years before in Monticello, a small town in Jasper County, Ga., where he grew up. It was his childhood dream to purchase the farm, which has become his second/vacation home. This is where most of the book takes place, as the two travel back and forth over the course of two years from Philadelphia.

Her father had recently learned he was dying from prostate cancer, which had been in remission for 15 years, and the first thing on their agenda for that trip was to roast a pig and get some chemo. The author writes, "My father read a newspaper article that chronicled the author's experiment with cooking a 70-pound pig in a Cuban-American-designed roasting box called La Caja China ... a simple plywood cart lined with metal and designed to suspend coals above rather than below the meat. The outcome, sweet and savory, succulent and crisp, earned the paradoxical moniker 'pig candy.' Pig candy? Dad ordered the largest model Caja from its Miami manufacturer and had it sent to the farm."

The author, who describes herself as a white-looking mixed-race woman, had always found her black father a bit of a mystery. When she was a child, her father was distant and hard to understand, more absorbed in his work than his family, yet she and her sisters were to uphold his high standards even to the end: "There was a right way to sweep the sidewalk, to stand up straight, to blow one's nose, to breathe."

She also writes about the often-fragile reality of their father-daughter union.

"This is the thing about my father. He's a study in fractions. He is various parts sharp and funny and kind and generous and playful. And he's cruel and baiting and grudge-holding and bitter and broken, broken, broken. I love parts of him. I hate parts of him. I forgive much of him, who he is and what he's done. And no matter how hard I try, I can't get past wanting him to turn on me a gaze of absolute, unfettered love."

Through their time spent on the farm, her father becomes less of a mystery as she learns more about his endearing quirks and about his childhood in Monticello — something he never talked about. Stories from his childhood friends and friends of the family gave her a glimpse of the way race relations in the South had played out and molded her father.

In the end, the author draws the reader into the most intimate details of her life, that of her father and of her family. While the ending is obvious, "Pig Candy" is a lesson about love coming full circle.
